A Cat and Dog Met on a Mat in the Fog

Dear Parents,

This week we will be working on rhyming words. In the classroom, we will be reading some of the classic rhymes. At this stage in your children’s education, they will begin to understand the sounds of spoken words. TEKS says that at this stage, “It includes recognizing and producing rhymes, dividing words into syllables, and identifying words that have the same beginning, middle, or ending sounds.”

1. Nursery Rhymes 4 U is a wonderful site to learn and recite nursery rhymes. Some of the nursery rhymes have music to them and some even have the music and words. Not only are you able read and listen to nursery rhymes, you can find those nursery rhymes that are good for playing games outside. Your children can also draw pictures that you can submit to the author of this site if you have access to scan the pictures. You can your children see the different pictures that other children have submitted from all over the world.

2. Do your children love to paint or play games. At Enchanted Learning, your children can paint rhymes or play games on matching rhyming words. This site also provides you with some ideas on making rhyming word games . You and your children will have fun playing the games and coloring pictures on the computer while learning traditional nursery rhymes. If you would really like to watch your children have a good time with reading rhymes, read a couple of tongue twisters to them.

3. To finish off this lesson, visit the Kaboose Reading Games site. You and your children can play games that match pictures and words that rhyme with the pictures. This is also a wonderful site to play games that will work on learning more about number and letters.

Rhymes are will fun to learn. Not only do your children love them but you will find that you love them just as much as they do. Maybe you and your children will find a cat and dog who met on mat in the fog.

It's as Easy as ABC & 123

Dear Parents,

This week we are learning about letters and numbers. TEKS says, "Letter knowledge is an essential component of learning to read and write." The following sites will make learning about letters and numbers fun for both you and your children.

1. At Starfall you can learn the letters of the alphabet and objects that start with each letter. You can also learn the alphabet in sign language. Along with learning the alphabet, you can begin to read some stories and play some games at the end of each story.

2. The Internet 4 Classroom site offers games in numbers, letters and reading activities. Enjoy finding objects and then counting how many you found. You can also click on letters and hear how they sound. Numbers and letters can be fun!

3. At I Know That, you can your children can play games to learn more about number, letters and shapes. You will have to register for this site, but it is free. If you find that you like the site, you can subscribe can get some extra features.I hope that you and children have fun learning numbers and letters at home as much as we do in the classroom.

It's Never Too Early

Dear Parents,

It is never to early to begin reading with your children. Your children will associate reading as a fun activity based on these early experiences. During the school, we will be motivating students to read. TEKS suggests tht "prekindergarten children benefit from environments that associate reading with pleasure and enjoyment as well as learning and skill development."

1. At the Nursery Rhymes Coloring Pages website, you can print out nursery rhymes coloring pages. As your child has fun coloring, you and your child can read and learn the nursery rhymes together. You also have access to other activities to do with your child for each nursery rhyme.

2. Going to the library is a great way to motivate your children. When you are not able to visit an actual library, you can visit the Children's Storybooks Online. Here you can read books online and some even have sound involved.

3. As your children begin reading, they will begin to have their favorite stories read over and over. At Childhood Reading, you can find those childhood classics and read them over and over again. For the books that you do not have at home, this site will a wonderful site to go back to and read over again.

I hope that you and your children enjoy reading the stories and nursery rhymes together.
